Postage Stamps - Railways and Traction

Foreword
The stamps shown here are by no means a complete representation from the countries concerned, only what I was able to acquire during my period of interest during the 1990s. A publication such as the Stanley Gibbons Thematic Catalogue (Collect Railways on Stamps) provides a complete summary.  This page has been prepared with the assistance of the Stanley Gibbons Thematic Catalogue 2nd edition, 1990, and the Stanley Gibbons Catalogue Stamps of the World 1981. Where available, each stamp caption is prefaced with the Stanley Gibbons catalogue number and the year of issue. (Where a stamp is not in my collection, it is so noted.)

Postscript
I am no philatelist, and this page defers to those who are. Nevertheless, as did so many youngsters of my generation, I did collect postage stamps in my childhood and early teens - and I regret to say I sold them all for the then princely sum of £3 to enhance my Hornby-Dublo trainset of the day. I still have mixed feelings about that transaction, because it included many stamps so generously bought for me by my grandad - but he must have been wise in the aspirations of youngsters, and for their need to learn to make their own decisions.

Then in my more mature years, I inclined again to stamps featuring railways and street/tram cars, and I offer this page in homage to an era when stamps adorned our mail with interesting quality-engraved designs, and treasured features such as legible cancellations that actually informed you of where and when the cancellation was made.
