Carl Riff's Railway History Diaries

Foreword
I had the good fortune to be referred to Carl when I was writing and researching for my book Hamilton's Other Railway over two decades ago. That book was my quest to answer some of the question marks left behind by my Rails To The Lakes many years earlier. One of those larger question marks was the history of the Hamilton & North Western Railway in Hamilton itself. This was when newspaper research was largely by microfilm in a library somewhere, and anything promising had to be printed out for a nominal fee per page or recorded by hand.  Carl, himself a Hamilton resident, most enthusiastically responded to my dilemma by going through the Hamilton Spectator for a span of over 30 years to pull out every mention of the H&NW that was to be found - and as many of you will know, even then, the Spectator was a daily paper, as opposed to the many weekly papers of the smaller communities. I still have his research and it's in three two-inch binders (and has been linked below under H&LE and H&NW). If Hamilton's Other Railway is accepted as a definitive history of the H&NW, the credit for that goes to Carl. It was only some time later that I discovered Carl's own intensive interest and research into the early railways of Quebec, at which time I came to hear of the numerous other historians, researchers, and authors whom he has assisted over the years.

This detailed meticulous research is Carl's hobby passion in his abiding belief of the importance of railways to Canada's development. Over a period of time Carl has transformed much of his extensive research from his handwritten notes in his original personal library of "duo tang" folders into a typed format. He would like his research to become available to a wider readership. It is for that wish that I am very pleased to offer to provide a forum. All that Carl asks that his work be credited as the source for anything that is published.

Diary Notes: IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ FIRST

  1. Some railways are diaried in sections, in other cases, the file has been subdivided to facilitate search and downloading.
  2. The file description, sequence and content is not always comprehensive and/or in chronological order, so you are advised to search adjoining files. Also occasionally, there is mislabelling, some articles may be incomplete, there may be duplication in different files, pages will appear as having been scanned sideways or upside down, and occasionally, pages may appear that are clearly unrelated. Also note that the designations "Part I", "Part II" etc., do not always coincide with Carl's designations. This has been a monumental labour of love for Carl over many years, and where there are shortcomings, both Carl and I ask for forgiveness. At least a lead to further research is usually apparent.
  3. Some sections may be substantial in terms of MB and may take a few minutes to load (especially for example the TH&B, Quebec Central, NTR, Newfoundland Ry, PEI, PGE and the CPR London Division).
  4. Where there are apparent gaps in a time sequence, this could be because there was no news, or because of a gap in the source paper's availability.
  5. In the case of microfilm scans, the quality of these is entirely dependent on the quality of the microfilm copier of the day. Some copies were made over two decades ago, and technology has much improved since then.
  6. Some newspaper reports appear in long columns, necessitating more than one page, and there is no guarantee that the entire sequence has been captured; and where it has, there will be copy overlaps.
  7. Carl's work on the H&LE and H&NW consists entirely of microfilm newspaper (mostly Hamilton Spectator) copies.
  8. All of Carl's documents have been deposited with the Hamilton Public Library, Central Library Local History and Archives Section, on York Street, Hamilton, Ont. under the "Riff Collection". Special credit goes to Margaret Houghton, Archivist, who had the foresight to save the Acton Burrows Ltd. original and complete Canadian Railway & Marine World and to preserve it on microfilm.
  9. For complementary information, please also consult pages Quick Railway Histories and other Information and Rod Clarke's TG&B and T&N Diaries.
